REVIEW — “The Good in People,” “A Sacrificial Escape,” and “Further from the Truth”

With Rachel and Josh from the Return to Odyssey Podcast: Listen on Anchor.fm

As anticipation for Album 70 grows, Josh and Rachel are back with Lee to review the next three episodes in the saga of Morrie Rydell.  In this review, the trio discuss the progression of the saga as red herrings abound, and how they play into compelling storytelling.  Plus, a lot of maniacal chuckling from Josh.

  1. I have like five long podcasts I want to hear over the long Thanksgiving weekend and I listened to this one first. These are so fun!

I consider Matthew’s in-between episodes to be important. They further progress his love of inventing and tinkering (“Failing to the Finishline” and “In a Sun-Scorched Land”) and his enjoyment for just casually hanging out with his family and friends (“The Sandwich Initiative”, Same Mold Story”, “Man of the House”, “Playing Favorites”, etc). They make his leaving the detective agency more believable. This character development of Matthew also really works with what we know about him from other detective agency episodes (he was ~always~ less enthusiastic about mysteries than Emily). His departure almost feels set-up since “Square One.” But the “I never feel more alive than when I’m solving a mystery with Emily” line does bother me, all things considered. Unlike Emily, mysteries were never his lifeblood and drive. It’s a weird line, but I will defend the overall development of Emily and Matthew’s story. 🙂

Apologies for nearly always posting long comments! Your reviews always have a great balance of being fun, thought-provoking, and interesting. I have been looking forward to this review for awhile and it was a pleasant surprise to see on my dash tonight. It’s so fascinating to hear the perspectives of fans hearing the episodes back-to-back.

  2. “…and there are a couple of my fans who are saying, ‘Come on, Lee! You’re being to hard on this episode…’”
Like me. Hmm… perhaps I’m being to hard on you being to hard on Further From the Truth. I never thought of it this way.
